I’m Liz, the gardener behind BRAE Garden Works.

I’ve spent much of the last decade exploring the West Coast of Scotland in my old Jeep Cherokee, having always been drawn to this part of the country for its wild landscape, expansive views and unparalleled natural beauty. A little over a year ago, I decided to put down some roots in Appin, turning my attention to working with the local landscapes rather than simply passing through them.

Alongside BRAE, I also work at Kinlochlaich Garden Centre with the hugely knowledgeable Fiona and team. Being surrounded by such a diverse and unusual collection of plants and working gardens has given me a real appreciation and understanding for what’s possible in a West Coast climate, particularly in the unique conditions created by the localised Gulf Stream.

For me, the most interesting gardens and natural spaces are those that respond to their surroundings, change with the seasons and develop character over time. The wind, rain, acidic soil, aspect and seasons all have a part to play. My approach is to understand what is already there, work with the conditions and know when, and how, to best care for a garden.

Whether it’s a managed outdoor space, a wild corner, a carefully planted border or even somewhere to sit with a morning coffee, I think a well considered garden can provide so much more than a nice aesthetic, it can add value and deep sense of place over time.

Outside of gardening, I’ve enjoyed a career that spans creative direction, design and photography. I still spend plenty of time outdoors with my camera, whether that’s out on the water, the lochans, or more recently up in the mountains.
